Northwitch Point
Northwitch Point
- March, 2019
Our first Grand Designs project built into the cliffs at Portpatrick.
Planning for a house on the cliffs at Northwitch Point in Portpatrick, which was home to a World War II radio station, had originally been refused for interrupting the local Regional Scenic Area. But our client had his heart set on creating a home there.
His solution was to completely bury the building within the landscape to hide it from passers-by on the land side, while creating a floor-to-ceiling glass wall, framing the stunning view of the ocean from the cliff side. We designed the building’s structure including foundations, retaining wall and steel frame, ensuring that the building was watertight and that the ground didn’t swallow it up.
The design by architects Robert Potter & Partners was featured on Grand Designs and won an award in the 2019 GIA Awards. You can read more about it in the awards entry here.
